Kashering & Kashrut for Pesach
·         Radvaz: Cleaning on Pesach = cleaning out yetzer hara (evil inclination) = teshuvah
·         Exodus 12:15 – “For a seven-day period shall you eat matzos, but on the previous day you shall nullify the leaven from your homes…”
·         Exodus 12:19 – “For seven days, leaven may not be found in your houses, for anyone who eats leavening, that soul shall be cut off from the assembly of Israel…”
·         Exodus 13:7 – “Matzos shall be eaten throughout the seven day period, no chametz may be seen in your possession…”
·         What is chametz?  5 grains in contact with water, >18min (incl. any ingredients, however minute)
·         3 prohibitions: (i) Eat, (ii) Own, (iii) Derive benefit
·         Belios (absorbed substances)
·         New dishes: Tevilah (immersion in mikveh) - All new metal, aluminum and glass (plus coatings)
·         Kashering year-round utensils: China, pottery, earthenware, rubber, Teflon-coated, plastic, utensils with plastic/wood handles CANNOT be kashered
·         Drinking glasses (only) – soak in water for three days (change water daily)
·         Tablecloths laundered – no starch
·         Kashering metal pots and cutlery – “Clean & 24”, then hagolah [boiling water, then cold water] (how to kasher huge pot?)
·         Sinks, counter tops – “Clean & 24”, then iruy [pouring hot water] (with even meluban, e.g. iron)
·         Buy new dish racks, washbasins
·         Electric appliances (e.g dishwasher) – chometz in unsealed motor area
·         Stove-tops: Clean, 24 hours, max. temp.  Cover knobs and catch trays.  Replace if possible
·         Self-cleaning oven: - complete cycle
·         Non self-cleaning – Clean, scrape, 24 hours, max. temp, cover racks with aluminum
·         Microwave (only chol hamoed) – Clean, 24 hours.  Cannot kasher glass tray.
·         Refrigerators/freezers – Cleaned/washed, covered
·         Websites: www.ou.org ; www.crcweb.org ; www.star-k.com ; www.mk.ca
·         Medicines: Non-chewable/ non-liquid – certification not required
·         Pet food
·         Search for Chametz – Time (after nightfall, approx. 9:14pm), tools (wooden spoon, feather, paper bag, candle), where?
·         Fast of Firstborn
·         Cease eating chametz 11:18am
·         Sell Chametz
·         Burn chametz 12:27pm
·         Seder times (after 9:15pm) – four cups, matzo, marror, maggid

Beth Israel is a beautiful Modern Orthodox synagogue in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.    We have daily minyanim morning and evening (see calendar) and an exciting array of programs. At Beth Israel there is something for everyone: Toddlers, kids, teens, young adults, adults and seniors.

Our synagogue is an affiliate of the OU organization
